About the Sustainable Buildings & RetrofitTech Qatar Summit
Qatar aspires to create a green and more resilient built environment; this small peninsular country aims to provide a sustainable business ecosystem and make noteworthy contributions to the global bid to mitigate climate change. The country has identified sustainable development as one of the top priorities as part of Qatar’s National Development Strategy.
Qatar’s construction sector is poised for an upwards growth trajectory with efforts being deployed to amalgamate the sustainability initiatives with digitalisation; the ultimate objective of greening the construction sector is to reduce the impact of built environment on human health and more importantly the natural environment, allowing the nation to embrace the future of construction.
As construction in Qatar speeds up, the country's government has realised the importance of sustainability and thus have launched several initiatives including the Qatar’s National Vision 2030 (QNV2030) and Qatar National Environment and Climate Change Strategy to support the country's transition to more sustainable economy. Furthermore, the formation of important government agencies including Kahramaa, Tarsheed and GORD show the country’s commitment to becoming a truly green economy. The country has rolled out several programmes to curb emissions and help the country adapt to its effects. These efforts are aimed at achieving a 25% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.
Smart and sustainable cities such as Lusail City and Msheireb are a true testament to the country’s commitment to becoming a truly green economy. Innovative techniques have been applied while planning these cities like ‘sustainable design’, ‘10-15-minute cities’ to name a few.
As the development gears up, Qatar has announced numerous tenders for the 2024 and plans to spend over QAR 70 BN, the focus now lies on ensuring both existing buildings and new infrastructure is environmentally friendly.
